system (GIS) software. This year saw the seventh

competition. Champions from different places were invited
to attend a week-long Esri user conference in the United
States in July, where they could exchange ideas with more
than 18,000 GIS professionals from all over the world.

Hong Kong’s champion in 2018 was Choy Tsz Hin, Frankie
from the University of Hong Kong. He researched the
local bus service. According to Frankie, the bus service

224 accounted for 33% of the total local trips in Hong Kong,
while the MTR represented 37%, the bus is an important
transportation mode in Hong Kong. However, in recent
years, the government has been determined to develop

the railway system, and has treated the bus service as
secondary.

In his project titled A Glimpse of Bus Services in Hong

Kong: The Territorial Bus Service Study – Finding Where
the Problems are, Frankie compiled a set of data, including
age, income, and population density for each district,
as well as the distance to the central business district,
