Protection Bill in September 2017, it included tougher rules
on consent, the right of access, move and delete data;
in May 2018, “the most important change in data privacy
regulation in 20 years” regarding the European Union
General Data Protection Regulation started to take effect.
Both of these updates include the “right to be forgotten”,
that means “individuals will be able to ask for their personal
data to be erased” from an organisation's records including
on social media. This offers peace of mind for citizens.
202 As pointed out by Chan Chun Sing, a member of
Singapore’s Committee on the Future Economy, big data
is a valuable economic resource that allows the country
to “overcome its intrinsic limitations in land, human capital
and natural resources”. In the era of smart city 3.0, which
is to embrace citizens collaboratively building our future
smart city, I truly hope that the Government will hasten the
implementation of opening and sharing data to build Hong
Kong into a world class smart city.
