environmental data collection boxes with sensors and
cameras in lampposts by the end of 2018. The project
“Array of Things” collects data on air quality, weather
conditions, magnetic fields, noise, and traffic.
Though initiated by the University of Chicago, every party
of the society, including the public, researchers, private
companies, and the government, can submit a proposal.
Once approved, the data will be collected for free and
made available to the public. It is expected to promote
204 innovative applications, alongside serving as a research
instrument.
As it will collect public data and images, privacy concerns
have been aroused. For example, one of the applications
is to understand the interaction of cars, bicycles and
pedestrians at road intersections so as to resolve the
conflicts among the three parties. People worried that the
video camera erected on the roadside would also record
their images.
